Understanding Depression: Myths vs Facts

“You don’t look depressed.”

“You just need to be more positive.”

Let’s stop saying these things — and start understanding them.

MYTH 1: Depression = sadness

FACT: It’s so much more. It’s fatigue, brain fog, emptiness, irritability, and loss of motivation — all rolled into one heavy blanket. Depression can feel like your energy, motivation, and joy have been switched off. It affects your body, thoughts, and emotions — not just your mood.

MYTH 2: You can “snap out of it.”

FACT: You can’t. Depression isn’t a mindset problem; it’s a mental health condition that needs care, not shame. You can’t “think away” depression. It’s not weakness — it’s an illness. Healing takes time, treatment, and compassion, not willpower alone.

MYTH 3: If your life looks good, you can’t be depressed.

FACT: You can have love, success, and stability — and still struggle internally. Depression doesn’t check your resume. Depression doesn’t care how successful or loved you are. You can have everything and still feel empty. It’s internal — not circumstantial.

MYTH 4: Talking about it makes it worse.

FACT: Talking helps. Silence makes people feel isolated. Real conversations break the stigma. Honest conversations open doors to understanding and support.

MYTH 5: Antidepressants are a “cop-out”.

FACT: They’re a lifeline for many. They don’t erase emotions — they help restore balance so healing can begin. Medication isn’t a weakness — it’s one of many tools that can help. Sometimes it’s what allows therapy and healing to work.

Truth:

Depression doesn’t mean you’re weak. It means you’re fighting battles most can’t see — and still showing up. That’s strength.
